Canyon’s Edge, a Prosser winery, is opening a new tasting room and bistro at Southridge Village in Kennewick.

Brian Groth said the family has been considering opening a tasting room in the Tri-Cities area for more than a year. But the perfect opportunity didn’t arise until a space became vacant in Southridge Village.

The 15,000-case, family-run winery was founded by Groth’s father, Dave, who was a real estate broker from Vancouver, Wash.

“Dad always wanted into the business and was doing research for a client looking to buy farms in the area,” Groth said.

Although that client didn’t buy any land through Dave Groth, he led the Groth family to a new career.

“Dad realized it was a good, viable business to get into,” Groth said.

Dave Groth bought 1480 acres in the Horse Heaven Hills and in 1999 planted the Aldercreek and Windy Ridge Vineyards. He planted 280 acres of grapes including cabernet, merlot, petit verdot, malbec, sangiovese, sauvignon blanc and cab franc, and started selling grapes to many Columbia Valley wineries, including Bookwalter and Bernard Griffin.

In 2002, the Groths enlisted John Haw as a winemaker and established the Canyon’s Edge Winery.

They opened the Canyon’s Edge tasting room in Prosser in 2005.

But Dave Groth was tragically killed in a four-wheeling accident in the Horse Heaven Hills vineyard in August, devastating the family, who are now trying to move forward.

“This was his dream, but we’ve all kind of realized it and as a family are passionate about it,” said Brian Groth, who moved to the Tri-Cities area from Vancouver in 2005 to help with the family business.

Groth said they want their Southridge tasting room to be more of a gathering place, with a bistro-type atmosphere.

The 2,000-sq.-ft. tasting room will serve a tapas-style menu and will include a specialty foods section featuring regional offerings, called Picnic.

They also plan to have special events like a book club each month.

The first book club will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 and author Bruce Bjornstad will be at the winery to discuss his book, “On the Trail of the Ice Age Floods.

When spring rolls around, the Winery will host the new Southridge Farmers’ Market from 4 to 8 p.m. each Thursday.

Groth said the winery’s Prosser tasting room will also remain open, but will move to The Wine Loft at Vintner’s Village in Prosser.

Canyon’s Edge Tasting Room and Bistro will open in February at 3617 Plaza Way, Suite C & D in Kennewick.

  1. John Winters says:

Would have been nice to include some basic directions to the new Canyon Ridge Tasting Room in your article.

I have attempted to map their address in Google, Bing and on my Garmin and there was no map available. I called the winery and their directions were hilariously bad.
    Thanks.
