Applications for a state tax credit that can provide eligible middle-class Washington families hundreds of dollars are now being accepted for the 2025 tax season.

It’s the third year that taxpayers can apply for Washington state’s Working Families Tax Credit, which provides up to $1,290 per year to taxpayers that qualify for the federal Earned Income tax credit.

Last year, the tax credit sent $135.9 million in state tax refunds to 158,000 families.

“That’s a real difference for people who need it the most,” said state Revenue Director Drew Shirk in a release. “This year we want to reach even more. This credit isn’t just for families, it is available to anyone who meets the eligibility requirements which means couples, and individuals can receive it too. So please check if you qualify and help us spread the word about this vital program.”

Requirements to receive a refund from the tax credit include having a valid Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number; have lived in Washington state for a minimum of 183 days for the year requesting the refund; are 25-64 years old or have a qualifying child; filed a 2024 federal tax return; eligible for the federal Earned Income tax credit and meet certain income requirements.

Based on the state’s income thresholds, childless individuals making as much as $18,591 or married couples making no more than $25,511 can receive $325. The maximum tax refund of $1,290 is available to individuals or married couples with three children making no more than $59,899 and $66,819, respectively.

Taxpayers can use online or paper application forms to file for the tax credit. Many types of tax filing software and tax preparation firms can also file the application when filing federal tax returns.
