The city of Kennewick, along with the Benton-Franklin Council of Governments, is working on an area-wide planning initiative to support revitalization in downtown Kennewick and its surrounding neighborhoods. They are asking for community feedback via a 24-question survey, expected to take about 10 minutes to complete.

The initiative aims to:

  • Identify property and building conditions and downtown sites with redevelopment potential.
  • Assess the city’s current zoning and development standards conditions.
  • Engage with community members and stakeholders to define local priorities and revitalization ideas.
  • Identify potential capital projects that would support revitalization.
  • Create an Urban Design Plan for the focus area, including potential land use designations, mobility enhancements and future amenities.
  • Define implementation strategies.

The initiative is funded by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant, to be used to identify brownfield sites, create an action plan for site cleanup and define strategies for reuse and redevelopment of those sites and surrounding neighborhoods. A brownfield is “real property, the expansion, redevelopment or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant” according to the EPA.
