State auctioning off coins, jewelry, other unclaimed property

Numismatists – or coin collectors – and other hobbyists, rejoice. An opportunity to snag a treasure or two from among hundreds of unclaimed coins, jewelry and other valuable items in an online auction starts this week.

Between May 13-20, auction house James G. Murphy Co. will auction off more than 3,500 items collected from hundreds of unclaimed safe deposit boxes, according to a release from the state Department of Revenue. The items include collectible coins and currency, jewelry, artwork, sports cards and other unique items.

Bidders can preview the unclaimed items online by visiting Murphy’s website. The inventory also can be viewed in-person from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. each day May 18-19 at Murphy’s facility at 3803 136th St. NE in Marysville.

All the items were turned over to the state after financial institutions holding the safe deposit boxes lost touch with owners and rental fees went unpaid for an extended period of time. State law requires the state to auction off the contents if the owners haven’t claimed the property within five years.

The state will hold on to proceeds from the auctioned items, minus auction and bank fees, to give to each safe deposit box owner or their heir once they come forward.

To see if you have unclaimed property, go to Washington’s unclaimed property website at claimyourcash.org, or go to Unclaimed.org/search to find unclaimed property in other states.
