Courtesy Arts Center Task ForceThe Arts Center Task Force is regrouping following the defeat at the ballot box for a sales tax-funded arts center and is looking for fresh faces to serve on its board and committees.
Citing the importance of relationships in sustaining the arts, executive director Blake Smith said in a letter to the group’s supporters that the call for volunteers for its governing body, as well as committees, is integral to moving forward.
“Just as meaningful as the art that’s presented, is the strategy that shapes it,” Smith wrote. “The planning, direction and purpose guiding our work allow us to deepen impact, broaden access and build a lasting cultural legacy. And at the center of it all – are people.”
The task force has worked for years to bring a dedicated performing arts venue to the Tri-Cities. Partnering with the Richland Public Facilities District in the February special election, it asked Richland voters for a two-tenths of a percent sales tax increase for 30 years to provide the bulk of the funding for the estimated $81 million project. The tax would have added 2 cents onto a $10 purchase.
The sales tax increase was rejected, with more than 60% of voters turning it down.
