What if growth were not something we associated only with school years, performance reviews, or New Year’s resolutions, but instead became part of our everyday life?
I realize I am writing to an audience that has not been in elementary school for quite some time. Yet, when I think about the men and women whose wisdom remains practical and helpful to others, they all seem to share one trait: They are the people who continue to place themselves in a learning atmosphere on purpose. When wisdom earned through life experience makes room for new knowledge, something powerful happens: Conversations deepen. Perspective widens. Communities grow stronger.
Take a moment and consider how you might continue to grow. It does not have to be complicated. Growth can come from reading a book, taking a class, or joining a group that challenges you to think differently. Sometimes growth comes from slowing down, listening to your children or grandchildren, and allowing their perspective to teach you something new.
One of my own New Year’s resolutions is to walk into a room looking for what I do not know rather than focusing on what I already do. That small shift in mindset has a way of opening doors to learning, humility and meaningful connection.
At the Columbia Basin Veterans Center, we are embracing this same philosophy as we launch a new educational program called Foundations 101 that’s designed specifically for veterans.
This program is open to people of all ages, from all military branches and walks of life. It is completely free, requires no homework and offers a certificate of completion as a reminder that you chose to invest in yourself and connect with another veteran. Make the decision today. Build skills. Gain confidence. Strengthen your foundation for what comes next.
The classes, which run through March 23, are from 6:30-8 p.m. Mondays at the Columbia Basin Veterans Center, 1020 S. Seventh Ave. in Pasco. Feel free to drop in to any of them.
Classes will cover self-evaluation and personal growth, communication skills, financial principles, resume and interview preparation, networking and circles of influence, personal and mental health awareness, conflict resolution and goal setting and achievement.
Whether you choose to join a class like this, spend time at your local library, or explore what your community center offers, take time to grow.
Add new knowledge to the wisdom you already possess. Growth does not end with age. It deepens when we choose it.
Sometimes the simple decision to keep learning is what makes the world a little better.
