Fruit processor Del Monte Foods is shuttering facilities in Yakima and Wapato in early August. The closures mean the loss of 51 jobs and 448 seasonal jobs.
The state Employment Security Department sent out the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, announcing the closure on June 9.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reported that the closure of the processing plant in Yakima, as well as two warehouses in the area, was in response to the company adjusting its operations to consumer demand. The processing plant was notable for its canned pear products.
It’s the second Yakima Valley facility the company has shut down in two years. In March 2024, Del Monte closed its Toppenish processing plant, which eliminated 127 jobs.
