Map by Ty BeaverA four-lane divided U.S. Highway 12 between Walla Walla and Wallula is on the horizon.
Funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Rural Surface Transportation Grant will provide $108.5 million to expand the last remaining two-lane undivided stretch of the highway, according to a release.
The new roadway will have a 42-foot-wide median and 4-foot-wide shoulders while also consolidating access points, improving intersections and adding safety features such as guardrails and crash cushions.
The grant was created as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that allocated $44 billion for rural communities to repair and improve roads, bridges, airports and transportation systems.
The Highway 12 project is the only one to receive funding from the grant in Washington state.
