The city announced that Michael Heffner will take over as chief on Oct. 16. He has served as interim fire chief since Chief Chad Michael retired this past summer.
“Chief Heffner distinguished himself throughout the selection process,” City Manager Erin Erdman said in a statement. “Heffner has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to our fire department. His promotion to interim fire chief allowed him to further showcase his capabilities, and we are confident that his experience and deep understanding of our organization make him the best choice to lead us forward.”
Heffner’s career has included stints as a firefighter, paramedic, hazardous materials technician, fire captain and training chief. He previously served as assistant chief deputy in the Oregon Office of the State Fire Marshal. In addition to his current role at the Kennewick Fire Department, he is an adjunct instructor at Columbia Basin College.
Nearly 40 people applied to be Kennewick’s next fire chief. The Western Fire Chiefs Association led the recruitment process which included the top four candidates participating in three interview panels covering operations, leadership and community engagement as well as participate in a high-profile fire incident role play scenario.
