Photo by Nathan FinkeThe city of Richland has officially closed on the purchase of a seven-story building off of Jadwin Avenue for a new police station.
The city bought the property at 1200 Jadwin Ave. on June 18 for a total of just under $7.1 million, down from the $7.75 million the city expected to pay. According to a news release, the city was able to renegotiate the price based on the findings from an independent appraisal and architectural and structural inspections.
City officials have said Richland’s current police station, built in 2000, is 19,000 square feet and the space is growing too small for the city’s needs. About 56,500 square feet will is expected to be needed to support police operations over the next 15 years.
At 126,000 square feet, the building at 1200 Jadwin Ave. will have enough space to support the police station with additional room to house other city services in the future.
The project will also make use of a long-vacant building while keeping the police station in central Richland, city officials said. The city is currently beginning the planning and design stages of the renovation.
