The city of Richland is looking for applicants to fill a vacancy on its city council after voters elected a candidate who died about two months before the general election.

The person appointed by the council to fill position No. 4 will serve until the candidate elected in the Nov. 2, 2027, general election takes office.

The position is vacant as more than 8,300 voters, or 56%, elected the late Donald Landsman in the November general election.

The Benton County Republican Party – and Landsman’s family – recommended Richland voters support the candidate who died on Aug. 31 at age 62 and whose name still appeared on the ballot.

Eligible applicants for the vacant seat must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a registered voter.
  • Have lived in the city of Richland for at least two continuous years prior to appointment.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Not hold any other public office (with the exception of service in the National Guard, organized reserves or as a Notary Public).
  • Not be employed by the city.

Those interested must submit a completed application and resume through the city’s website by 5 p.m. Jan. 16. Interviews will be scheduled after review of the submitted materials.

Go to: richlandwa.gov/bccvacancies or call the city clerk’s office at 509-942-7389.

The Richland City Council meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month at Richland City Hall, 625 Swift Blvd.
