One of downtown Kennewick’s newest stores made a big move ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Storytime Bookshop relocated to 107 W. Kennewick Ave., the former storefront for Sassafras Children’s Boutique, in early October, moving from its original location at the western end of downtown where it shared a building with The Sports Page and Bateman Apartments.

The new storefront means more space for more inventory, events and programming just a year after the bookstore first opened.

“We outgrew our current space,” owner Lorelei Kennedy told the Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business in September. “We’re hoping the move will allow people to do more in-person holiday shopping.”

Storytime primarily sells used books for children and adults, in English and Spanish, as well as handmade bookmarks, gifts and other items. It also hosts KeenEye, the photography business of Kennedy’s partner, Jason Keene.

However, Kennedy, who has a background in theater and teaching, also provides play-based activities, such as puppets and crafts, at the bookstore to draw more youth to reading. The shop also holds classes for adults in public speaking, storytelling and sewing.

“The first year has gone really well,” Kennedy said.

Storytime’s new storefront will provide 1,000 more square feet of space and the move was intentionally made ahead of the holiday shopping season so it could serve even more customers.

But Kennedy didn’t wait to make use of the new space until the end of the year. Kennedy held events around Banned Books Week from Oct. 5-13 soon after opening the door of the new shop.
