Franklin County commissioners will meet with the top state official of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development office on how the agency’s programs and funding could serve the county’s economic development needs.

The workshop with Kirk Pearson, state director for USDA Rural Development, is expected to start at 11 a.m. June 25, immediately after the commissioners’ regular meeting at the Franklin County Courthouse. The meeting will be available via livestream on YouTube.

“This visit represents a significant opportunity to showcase our community's vision and challenges directly to federal partners,” said Commissioner Rocky Mullen in a statement. “We are eager to learn more about the specific programs and funding available through USDA Rural Development that can help us achieve our goals for growth and a stronger future for all Franklin County residents.”

USDA’s Rural Development office primarily supports economic development in rural communities via grants, loans and other programs. According to a release, the commissioners and Pearson are set to tentatively discuss topics including

  • Expanding broadband Internet to underserved areas.
  • Improving infrastructure such as water and wastewater facilities.
  • Upgrading community facilities that serve needs such as health care, public safety and education.
  • Providing technical and capital support to local businesses.
