Washington State University Tri-Cities' top leader will oversee two additional campuses as the WSU system seeks to modernize its administrative structure.

Chancellor Sandra Haynes’ new role as executive vice president for WSU statewide campuses will put the Vancouver and Everett campuses under her leadership as part of an effort to enhance collaboration across campuses, improve financial stewardship and ensure the campuses are meeting the needs of student, communities and employers, according to a release.

“Dr. Haynes is a leader who brings clarity, integrity, and a people-centered approach to her work,” said WSU President Betsy Cantwell. “She is known for fostering trust and empowering others to create environments where innovation can thrive.”

While WSU campuses previously operated with significant autonomy, university leaders said that approach no longer serves WSU’s mission and academic priorities, as well as challenges around current enrollment patterns and financial realities. Haynes’ role will replace the separate chancellorships that have previously served as their top administrator.

Haynes is no stranger to taking on more responsibilities outside the campus in Richland. She was named interim chancellor for Vancouver almost a year ago when prior chancellor Mel Netzhammer retired. She also has already taken on initiatives in Everett specifically around sustainable aviation fuel, a field that has a strong presence at the Tri-Cities campus.

“My goal is to strengthen our system as one unified university by leveraging the distinct strengths of each campus to elevate the whole,” said Haynes. “When one campus succeeds, we all succeed.”
