Benton County has completed upgrades and expanded its canine shelter in Kennewick, adding space to better house stray and dangerous dogs from the unincorporated parts of the county.
The facility is at 1116 N. Grant Place, Kennewick, next door to Meyers Auto Tech and across from Vista Veterinary Hospital.
The improvements included 2,211 square feet of remodeled and new space. The building now features 32 kennels, up from 16.
The remodeled portion includes 13 dangerous-dog kennels, nine stray-dog kennels and four puppy/quarantine rooms. Outdoor capacity also increased with the addition of 16 fully covered kennels with misters, replacing four previously uncovered spaces.

The shelter improvements support the county’s growing needs, providing room for more dogs as the population expands. The project also coincided with staffing increases, adding two new officers for a total of five full-time officers, plus one on-call officer available 24/7 for dangerous-dog calls.
The project was completed Nov. 17.
Banlin Construction of Kennewick is the general contractor.
MMEC Architecture of Kennewick is the architect.
