One of the largest organizers of global conventions will once again draw thousands of people to Kennewick beginning this weekend.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses’ three-day annual convention at the Toyota Center kicks off Friday, Aug. 23, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 25 at 7000 W. Grandridge Blvd. The program returns for another three-day run Aug. 30-Sept. 1.

Two conventions were held in July, one in English and the other in Spanish.

Jehovah’s Witnesses have been holding conventions in the Tri-Cities annually since 1992, not counting a three-year pandemic hiatus.

“The fact that we doubled the number of our conventions in the Tri-Cities this year speaks to the strength of our partnership. We value this mutually-beneficial relationship,” said Erik Larson, regional spokesman.

This year’s Jehovah’s Witness’ program aims to comfort and encourage the public with a “Declare the Good News” convention series theme.

The event is expected to draw more than 13,000 attendees to the city over the course of four weekends, fueling the city’s economy with local spending at stores, hotels and restaurants.

Organizers estimate the four conventions will inject about $6 million into the economy.

“We are excited to work once again with city officials in the Tri-Cities to host our conventions,” said Nate Gibb, local spokesperson for Jehovah’s Witnesses, in a statement. “These conventions are a highlight of the year for thousands of people who want to experience some positivity in their lives, and we are happy to enjoy the program once again in this welcoming and hospitable city.”

Paul Elliott of Post Falls, Idaho, has been attending conventions for 50 years. He said he enjoys being among so many friends, and “the love that you feel at these conventions is really noteworthy. I love them.”

He said the conventions offer inspirational talks along with practical information “for yourself and your family to really help you keep focused on what’s important in life.”

Josh and Christel Valmas of Milton-Freewater, Oregon, said attending the convention is a highlight for their family.

“We are uplifted by the program. I don’t think anyone likes dealing with life’s uncertainties, so this year’s focus on Jesus’ message of good news is particularly exciting. I’m happy people will have four different opportunities to attend locally, as these events never disappoint,” Josh Valmas said.

Last year, nearly 13 million people attended more than 6,000 three-day conventions worldwide.
