Each year, the current Leadership Tri-Cities class selects a community project that will leave a tangible, lasting impact.
“I really wanted to support a nonprofit project that would have a genuinely positive community impact, and a project we could roll our sleeves up for – both figuratively and literally – to ensure the success of our nonprofit partner. For me, the Columbia Valley Center for Recovery is a project that checks all of those boxes and I am passionate about my support for this community need. And, if we take a step back to view the overarching impact of the (the center) – we are truly helping families, children and our community at large with an issue that plagues so many and does not discriminate,” said class member Winnie Alberg of Johnson & Johnson Law Firm, in a release.
Renovation is underway on the former Kennewick General Hospital campus, where the recovery center is being established as the region’s first inpatient substance use treatment facility.
“This initiative resonates with me on a deeply personal level. I have lost a family member to addiction and have witnessed firsthand the pain and struggle it causes. The chance to have a local facility dedicated to helping those in our community is invaluable, and I truly believe it will make a meaningful difference. Moreover, being involved in enhancing the center’s appearance to create a calm and welcoming environment fills me with immense pride and gratitude,” said class member Shelby Simmelink of Senior Life Resources in a release.
The leadership group plans to add decorative rocks and paint an outbuilding that was not included in the current renovation phase to create a welcoming space for those taking their first steps toward healing. The $30,000 project kicks off May 9.
The class launched a fundraising campaign to collect $30,000 to pay for materials, supplies and labor for the project and met its goal in late April. Additional donations will go to the recovery coalition. The deadline to donate is May 30.
“This isn’t just about beautification – it’s about creating an environment where people feel safe, supported and motivated to begin their recovery journey,” said class member Sonee Kulaga Wilson of Goodwill Industries of the Columbia in a release. “Recovery is hard enough; we want to remove any additional barriers and help create a place that fosters healing.”
