Unhealthy air quality has prompted Kennewick and Richland to postpone their National Night Out events, both originally set for Aug. 4. 

Smoke from Northwest wildfires has contributed to poor air quality in the Tri-Cities region. The National Weather Services issued an air quality alert until further notice, noting pollutants can cause burning eyes and running nose, and aggravate heart and lung disease and other serious health problems. It recommends limiting outdoor activities and keeping children indoors.

Richland city leaders determined that postponing the event was the best decision to protect the health and safety of community members, volunteers, vendors, public safety personnel and city staff.

“We know many families, community partners, sponsors and staff have been looking forward to this event,” said City Manager Jon Amundson in a release. “While we are disappointed to postpone, the health and safety of our community must come first. We appreciate everyone's understanding and look forward to bringing the community together as soon as conditions allow.” 

Richland has rescheduled its National Night Out, along with its City Fair, to 5-7:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at Howard Amon Park. For updates, go to: RichlandWA.gov/NNO.

Kennewick's new date is also Aug. 20, from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Southridge Sports & Events Complex and Numerica Pavilion, 2901 Southridge Blvd.

“The safety and well-being of our community, event attendees, partners and staff members is our top priority. The city appreciates the community’s excitement and support and will share information regarding a rescheduled date as soon as details become available,” the city said in a release.

Pasco police posted on social media at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 3 that its event was still planned from 5-8 p.m. at the Pasco Sports Complex soccer fields near Gesa Stadium, 6200 Burden Blvd., Pasco.

National Night Out is part of a campaign to build stronger police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie, with the goal of making neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live and work.
