Photo by Kristina LordThe unit of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park based at the Hanford site brought nearly 20,000 visitors and pumped hundreds of thousands of tourism dollars into the Tri-Cities in 2024.
The National Park Service detailed the financial impacts from the multi-site national park in its report on visitor spending at all national parks in 2024. All told, visitors spent $29 billion in communities near national parks, according to the agency.
The lodging sector benefited the most from that spending, with $11.1 billion in economic output. Restaurants received the next greatest direct contribution with $5.7 billion in economic output.
The Manhattan Project National Historical Park was established in 2015. The Hanford site, with the B Reactor as its centerpiece, generated $733,000 in visitor spending in the Tri-Cities, the least visitor spending of the three units that make up the park. The park recorded a total of 19,644 visits.
The unit at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, recorded $2.8 million from nearly 30,000 visitors. The unit at Los Alamos, New Mexico, had more than 25,000 visitors who spent an estimated $1.8 million in the community.
