Small business owners in the LGBTQ community can now certify their businesses with the state at no cost, potentially helping them access government contracts.
The new LGBTQ Business Enterprise program was announced by the state Office of Minority & Women’s Business Enterprises via a partnership with the Washington State LGBTQ Commission.
Officials with both agencies said the new certification is aimed at improving equity in government spending through procurement contracts and other purchasing activities.
“We know that the LGBTQ+ community faces economic disparities, and this recognition – along with the ongoing work of many individuals and organizations from community – can help move the needle toward a fairer economy for all Washingtonians,” said state LGBTQ Commissioner & Secretary Matt Landers in a statement.
To qualify, a small business must be for profit and licensed to do business in Washington state. LGBTQ+ individuals must own at least 51% of the business, manage and control day-to-day operations, and fall under a personal net worth threshold.
