Veteran crew members of the USS Triton nuclear-powered submarine will be honored at a celebration June 14 when a new commemorative wall is unveiled at the park where its sail and conning tower were installed after decommissioning.
The wall is engraved with all the officers and crew who have served aboard Triton, the first and only U.S. nuclear-powered submarine operated by dual nuclear reactors, which were developed after Hanford reactors, according to a release. The event is free and open to the public.
The submarine also was the first to circumnavigate the globe completely submerged as part of a top-secret mission called Operation Sandblast.
The event begins at 10 a.m. at USS Triton Sail Park at 3250 Port of Benton Blvd. Several Triton veterans are anticipated to attend. Tours of Triton’s conning tower will be available after the ceremony, and Triton artifacts will be displayed in the port’s lobby across the street from the park.
