Crews started geotechnical drilling this week as part of the lead up to the city of Richland’s redesign of the Highway 240 and Aaron Drive intersection. City officials say drivers should expect shoulder and lane closures in the area of the intersection, including on the Interstate 182 off-ramp, and traffic delays through early May.
The drilling is expected to inform the final design for the intersection, which is currently envisioned as a roundabout. The corridor is one of the region’s busiest and congestion, particularly during the morning and evening commutes, can lead to severe traffic backups. The intersection also lacks safe access for pedestrians and cyclists.
“The SR 240/Aaron Drive Intersection Improvements Project is designed to address these challenges by improving traffic flow, enhancing safety, and expanding multimodal access,” the city said in a statement.
