Wildland fires have damaged several areas along the Snake River, prompting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Walla Walla District to warn hunters and other visitors that some areas may be unsafe this fall. 

The burned units – which normally offer public fishing, hunting and hiking as well as wildlife habitat – have degraded terrain and vegetation loss that could pose hazards, the Corps said. Visitors planning trips to the area should expect changing conditions and adjust plans accordingly. 

Habitat management units, or HMUs, with significant fire damage include, but are not limited to: 

Lower Snake River West 

• Hollebeke HMU 
• 55 Mile HMU 
• Skookum HMU 

Lower Snake River East 

• Lyons Ferry HMU 
• Texas Rapids HMU 
• Little Goose Landing HMU
