Reports of a fire at El Tequilas at 109 W. Kennewick Ave. were called in to 911 dispatchers about 6:45 a.m. The orange glow of flames could be seen reflecting off the smoke at times.
Multiple engines from the Kennewick Fire Department as well as Pasco, Richland and Benton Fire District 1 responded, along with law enforcement and emergency medical services.
Fire investigators are working to determine the cause and origin of the blaze. Preliminary findings suggest the fire started inside the restaurant and partially became self-extinguished, remaining in a smoldering phase until fire crews arrived. When firefighters entered the restaurant, the introduction of fresh air briefly intensified the flames.
Two firefighters were evaluated by on-site paramedics following aggressive fire suppression efforts. Both were cleared and returned to duty.
As of the early afternoon of March 17, the fire was extinguished but vehicles were barred from driving on the block of Kennewick Ave. between Auburn and Benton streets. Fire officials continue to monitor the restaurant for any potential reignition.
Fire officials will conduct a full investigation of the building once smoke and carbon monoxide levels reach safe thresholds. The restaurant sustained significant fire and smoke damage while neighboring business appear to have only received some smoke and odor impacts from the blaze.
The Historic Downtown Kennewick Partnership and city officials said firefighters did rescue five kittens from the restaurant’s roof while responding to the fire. They are now in the care of Tri-City Animal Services and will eventually be put up for adoption.
