Just in time for derby – Distillery releases limited bourbon whiskey made with Walla Walla wheat

Mint-Juleps

The Kentucky Derby is tomorrow so why not make a mint julep to nurse during the race with a bourbon whiskey tied to the region?

503 Distilling of Portland will release its first small batch bourbon whiskey on May 3 to celebrate the iconic horse race, according to a release.

Included in its mash of corn and rye is a high percentage of Walla Walla winter wheat which the distillery says makes its bourbon whiskey softer, smoother and more approachable for those who want to imbibe.

“This bourbon represents years of patience and craftsmanship,” said Rusty Caldwell, 503 Distilling’s master distiller. “We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve created – a bourbon with notes of honey, oats, graham cracker and a beautiful vanilla finish that’s surprisingly smooth for its proof.”

The bad news is that you can only pick up one of the available 420 bottles by visiting the distillery’s lounge in Portland.

Want to make a non-alcoholic julep? Check out this recipe.
