State offering listening sessions on changes coming to sales tax requirements

 How much Washington should raise in new tax revenue and who will pay is something state lawmakers and Gov. Bob Ferguson will hash out in the final weeks of the legislative session.

Washington state lawmakers made some significant changes to the state’s sales tax law and officials will host a series of online listening sessions to answer questions, address concerns and provide guidance to business owners. 

ESSB 5814 will require sales tax to be collected on a several additional services beginning Oct. 1, including: 

  • Information technology services. 
  • Custom website development services. 
  • Investigation, security, and armored car services. 
  • Temporary staffing services. 
  • Advertising services. 
  • Live presentations. 
  • Sales of custom software and customization of prewritten software. 
  • Modification of digital automated services (DAS) exclusions. 

The upcoming remote listening sessions begin July 22 and will each be an hour long. Those interested in attending must register ahead of time. Each meeting will be limited to 100 participants. View the meeting schedule and register online. 

Anyone unable to attend may submit feedback online through Aug. 1.
