Mini roundabouts, detours and road closures coming to Richland intersections

A view above a Richland neighborhood with construction.

Construction crews have begun work of a mini roundabout at the intersection of Thayer Drive and Williams Avenue in Richland. Two other mini roundabouts will be built in central Richland by the end of the summer as part of the city’s systemic stop-controlled intersection safety improvement project.

Get ready for road closures and detours when driving in central Richland for the next several months.

The city of Richland kicked off the first phase of its systemic stop-controlled intersection safety improvement project on this week. The work includes the installation of mini roundabouts at three intersections, according to a release. The project aims to improve traffic flow and safety across the city.

Work crews are starting at the intersection of Thayer Drive and Williams Boulevard. The intersection will be closed through the end of April for work to be completed, with detours provided.

Mini roundabouts also will be installed at the Stevens Drive and Symons Street intersection from late April through early June and then at Swift Boulevard and Wright Avenue from early June to mid-August.

Other planned improvements as part of the project include:

  • Curb extensions, along with new signage, pavement markings, and traffic control measures at Goethals Drive & Torbett Street and Wright Avenue and Lee Boulevard.
  • Advanced warning system at Kennedy Road and Duportail Street to alert drivers to stopped vehicles at the intersection or turning onto Duportail to reduce congestion and the risk of accidents.
