A Prosser-based family business known for its cherry and chocolate confections is reporting it reached its processing goals despite a challenging cherry harvest. 

Chukar Cherries processed 285 tons of fresh cherries this season, according to a release. That’s 65 tons less than the record 350 tons it processed last year but the state’s cherry crop was down 16% because of freezes in the spring. 

“It was a challenge to process fruit fast enough,” said Tim Oten, General Manager of Chukar Cherries, in a statement. “The last few years we’ve focused on equipment upgrades and operational improvements in anticipation of unpredictable harvests. This year showed just how important those investments have become.” 

The company is celebrating the end of harvest by hosting a cherry-themed giveaway in collaboration with Northwest Cherries. Entry details are available on Chukar Cherries’ Facebook and Instagram pages.
