An $8 million project that will build new lanes for drivers to more safely merge on and off Highway 240 will soon begin creating travel disruptions.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has already built a noise reduction wall along the southern portion of Highway 240 to shield Moon River RV Resort from construction noise, according to a release. Next up is paving and other repairs to Kingsgate Road, Battelle Boulevard and Stevens Drive, which will create travel restrictions during weekdays.

The improvements to those roads will allow them to be used as a detour for drivers during the next phase starting in June. That’s when work on the intersection of Hagen Road and Highway 240 will begin, including reconstruction and widening of the highway as well as traffic signal improvements. The intersection will be closed nightly from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. Sunday evenings through Saturday mornings.

The project is anticipated to finish in August.
