Construction has started at the Richland Airport to improve the functionality, safety and durability of its main apron.  

Work on the Port of Benton project began Aug. 18 and is expected to continue through Sept. 30. Portions of the main apron will be reconfigured to make better use of available space, expand aircraft parking capacity, protect existing hangars and strengthen weaker pavement areas.  

The project is partially funded by a Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Funds grant, totaling $1.1 million, with a 5% port match. It’s also funded by a $57,000 Airport Improvement Program grant with a 5% port match.  

Construction will occur in two designated work areas, requiring temporary closures during the project period. The area highlighted in blue on the port’s map will be closed for the duration of the project, while a smaller area, highlighted in green, will be closed for just four days, though the dates of that closure are yet to be determined.  

“These improvements will help Richland Airport better serve the needs of pilots, tenants and visitors while positioning the airport for future growth,” said Quentin Wright, airport manager for the port, in a statement. “We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our tenants and airport users as we complete this important infrastructure investment.”
